This gleaming, fine old fire truck was originally purchased by the City of Hanford back in 1950 through Buckner Studebaker of Hanford. This truck served Hanford dependably for thirty-five years before its retirement in 1985. After a reasonably short period of idleness, the fire truck was to become fit for a new mission . . . a unique downtown shuttle. Because the City of Hanford is "One of California's Hidden Treasures," the Visitor's Agency saw great value in establishing a shuttle service for the thousands of people who visit our quaint little town. "Freddie," as the fire truck is known, shuttles people from the AMTRAK Station to their destination and back again for a nominal fee. Groups of visitors arriving in Hanford have taken advantage of its open air appeal to ride the streets, learning bits and pieces of Hanford's history as well as enjoying the pleasant downtown vistas. Speaking of Hanford's history, visitors learn everything they ever wanted to know about Hanford from our volunteer tour guides known as the "Hanford Show-Offs." Although the Hanford Show-Off's Tour Guide Club was formally organized in the spring of 1986, visitors to Hanford were being escorted through our historic sites as early as 1983. The Hanford's Visitor Development Committee was organized in 1980 and they designated their main objective to be creating a means of "entertaining" the hundreds of visitors arriving via AMTRAK. Within the Visitor Development Committee, several enthusiastic members assisted in the research of "Historic Hanford" to formulate possible tours. Compiling information, jotting it down and finally formatting a walking tour route became a total, voluntary effort with Larry Stamps, Camille Wing and Marsha McGee. Today, Hanford has more than twenty members of the Show-Off Tour Guide Club. Each member has their own style and stories that make Hanford a great town to tour or just visit. tours, contact the Hanford Visitor Agency at (559)582-5024 |
