| Hanford's Historic Walking Tours are a delightful way in which to view the beautification efforts of this community, as well as to reminisce into the past. The tours are specifically designed for walking enjoyment but on occasion buses may be utilized with "step on" guides. The guided tours are conducted by members of the Hanford Show-Offs Tour Guide Club, a totally volunteer group who truly have fun "showing off" Hanford. Prior arrangements for guided historic tours must be made by contacting the Hanford Visitor Agency.
The Tours #1- The Turn of the Century Perhaps the most popular tour is our "Turn of the Century" tour where visitors explore the heart of Hanford's Historic District. Within the three blocks surrounding the old Kings County Courthouse this tour visits the former Kings County Sheriff's Office and Jail (The Bastille). The Carnegie Museum (formerly the Carnegie Library), the lovely imposing Hanford's Civic Auditorium, the Veterans/Senior Citizen Center and on special occasions, the historic Hanford Fox Theater (one of the oldest restored movie houses in the state). #2- Hanford's Beginnings Probably one of the most interesting, but seldom participated in tours is our "Hanford's Beginnings" tour. Requiring a bit of reminiscent imagination, this tour returns the visitor to Hanford's very roots. The guide recreated the aura of the 1870's when Hanford was born amidst the near desert of the San Joaquin Valley roamed by plentiful wildlife and peace loving Tache Yokut Indians and a Chinese Sheepherder. A step back into history when the railroads were developing their empire, a result of which became Hanford's origin. #3- China Alley A favorite for everyone is a visit to Hanford's once bustling China Alley. The alley is the site of Hanford's Taoist Temple, constructed in 1893 which had been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. #4- Our fourth tour is a specialty tour especially geared toward children that includes a fire truck ride and Carousel usage.
