Hanford's Historic Points of Interest
Fort Roosevelt

Bring the children on this one! Fort Roosevelt's two acres sparkle with fun, atmosphere and history. See pioneer life in a log cabin. Enjoy California plant life from the desert and mountains to the ocean. Learn about animal life...with live animals. See the museum exhibits in the old Southern Pacific Freight Depot, built in 1893.

Fort Roosevelt was created during the late sixties when environmental and cultural education were becoming popular. It works in cooperation with California Department of Fish & Game to rehabilitate injured wildlife. Non-releasable wildlife species are housed in the Fort and can be viewed while on a tour. The Fort offers environmental education programs to school and youth groups by appointment. These groups have the opportunity to learn about conservation, pondlife, native California plants, wildlife behavior and the need to preserve natural areas for future generations. Our education programs provide hands-on activities to maximize the learning experience. There is a small fee (donation) for gaining entrance to the treasures of Fort Roosevelt. To make tour arrangements please call (559) 582-8970.
