Hanford's Historic Points of Interest
Kings County Courthouse

The seat of Kings County Government from 1896 until 1979, was located in Historic Hanford's Civic Center Park. The Courthouse remains, with renovations for commercial use, after having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A new government center, built about a mile west of the old courthouse, led City Council members to the consideration of demolishing the 1896 edifice to provide desperately needed parking within Hanford's downtown district. Fortunately for those visiting Hanford, and residents alike, a special committee organized itself into a coalition to save the courthouse. After much investigation and the filing of papers, 1979 became a landmark year to recall, as the courthouse was saved and was placed on the National Register. As a result of gaining this registry, renovation did not have to be as strict as would be dictated by the period for new construction codes. Grants from the state became accessible to help in financing such a project of historic merit.

Renovation created the renewed structure that we enjoy within the confines of the original building. Keeping the original entrance steps, internal steel stairway, ceramic tile floors, marble decoration near the floor level along the walls and with the addition of the stained glass over each doorway, the courthouse has become a landmark for continuing use for generations of future enjoyment and pride.
